Connect Smart Week Events

Connect Smart week 2015 kicked off at Parliament in the Banquet Hall for our launch event.

Launch Event 2015

Over 140 attendees turned up to the event at Parliament, launched by Hon Christopher Finlayson, (standing in for Hon Amy Adams) and Paul Ash, Director of the National Cyber Policy Office, part of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Both Hon Christopher  Finlayson and Paul Ash spoke of the success of the Connect Smart public/private partnership to-date, growing to a membership of over 100 strong in the past year. The engagement of the partners on the issue is obvious, and critical to the successful future of “NZ Inc.” To that end, and because cyber security is an issue that never stops, the partnership has shifted to a year-round programme of working together to help create a cyber secure New Zealand. We look forward to presenting the upcoming cyber security strategy for New Zealand later in the year.

The second day of Connect Smart week focused on SMEs, and we host ed discussion groups in partnership with BizDojo and GridAKL in Wellington and Auckland. The conversation centred on cyber security trends and the challenges SME’s face with limited resources. Robust discussions were had at both spaces, talking about everything from email safety tips through to trends in international crime in areas such as ransomware. The event highlights the mixed spread of SMEs from informed and tech savvy to ill-equipped and “happen-to-be-online”. Pizza and drinks facilitated both discussions!

Experts from some of Connect Smart’s partners spoke at the events.  In Auckland speakers were Ryan Cotterell, Head of Information Security, ASB, Dave Eaton, Chief Technologist, HP and Heather Ward, Principal Advisor, National Cyber Policy Office.

Our partners created some great content throughout the week. The Institute of Directors released a new cyber security course and practice guide for directors; Facebook put together some Connect Smart videos featuring government Ministers; partners ASB and ANZ posted some “Spot The Difference” internet banking phishing tweets and Marsh, along with KPMG and Delta, worked together to create some awesome Connect Smart videos. Plus a whole lot more!
